Western Isles Support for Ukraine

  • Submitted by: Alasdair Allan, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 15 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03592

That the Parliament commends the work of Uist resident, Ania Radzikowska, who, it understands, recently led efforts across the Western Isles to gather donations, as part of an appeal set up by Polish Scots, for Ukrainian refugees who have fled to Poland following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; notes that items requested, as well as food and clothing, included spare first aid kits from local fishing boats; recognises what it sees as the generosity of local communities and businesses in the Western Isles, such as hauliers Macinnes Brothers, of Benbecula, Woody’s Express Parcels, of Stornoway, and DR MacLeod, also of Stornoway who, it understands, offered to load and transport the donations; understands that the donations are now en route to Poland, where they will be distributed by partner charity organisations; urges people in Scotland to continue to support relief efforts in Ukraine, and bordering nations, through donating, if they are able, to organisations such as the Disasters Emergency Committee; expresses its deepest sympathy for the people of Ukraine, and acknowledges what it sees as the solidarity shown by people across Scotland for the Ukrainian people, as evidenced, it believes, through material and financial donations.
