That the Parliament marks with deep sympathy and solemn reflection the 66th anniversary of the Auchengeich mining disaster, which occurred on 18 September 1959 and remains one of the darkest days in Scotland’s industrial history; recognises that this catastrophic event claimed the lives of 47 men, aged between 20 and 62, who perished while simply doing their jobs to support their families and communities; acknowledges the profound grief left behind in its wake, 41 women widowed and 67 children left without a father, an impact that continues to resonate across generations in Moodiesburn and the surrounding areas; pays tribute to the remarkable resilience, dignity and unity of the community, which has carried this legacy of loss with quiet strength for more than six decades; commends the ongoing efforts of the Auchengeich Memorial Committee, whose unwavering commitment ensures that these men are never forgotten, not just as victims of a tragedy, but as fathers, sons, brothers and friends; notes that the annual memorial service held at the Auchengeich Miners Club stands as a powerful act of remembrance and a testament to the enduring bond between past and present, and encourages continued reflection on the human cost of Scotland’s industrial past, while honouring the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their families and communities.

That the Parliament congratulates the Irvine couple, Graham and Ruby Burns, on celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary on 28 July 2025; notes that the couple, who first met on a blind date at the Melbourne Café in their hometown, were married at the old Landsborough Church in 1965; recognises their contributions to community life through their family business, Burns’ Shoe Shop, on Kilwinning Main Street, and their involvement with the Round Table and Ladies Circle, which organised the McGavin Park summer carnival; acknowledges Ruby’s local claim to fame as the Saltcoats Sea Queen of 1957; celebrates their growing family, which now includes five sons, 13 grandchildren and one step-grandchild, and commends their lasting commitment to one another, demonstrated by 60 years of marriage.

That the Parliament welcomes the launch of Impactful Parents, a new employability programme by Impact Arts designed to support unemployed or economically struggling parents and caregivers in North Ayrshire; notes that the programme, running from 22 September to 18 November 2025 at Bank Street, Irvine, combines creative activities such as painting, drawing and crafting with career development support, including CV writing, interview skills and the opportunity to gain the SQA Communications Unit qualification; recognises that the programme also offers one-to-one wellbeing support, childcare-friendly hours, free lunch and travel expenses, ensuring accessibility; notes the provision of taster sessions in Dalry, Kilwinning, Stevenston and Irvine, and commends Impact Arts for providing a supportive and innovative approach to building confidence, skills and opportunities for parents across North Ayrshire.

That the Parliament congratulates Dalswinton Mill, near Dumfries, on its successful Garden Open Day fundraising event for Scotland’s Garden Scheme and Loch Arthur Camphill Community, which was held on 10 August 2025; welcomes that the garden owners, Colin and Pamela Crosbie, organised the event, which opened the garden for visitors to explore and included a mini plant fair with specialist nurseries, horticultural demonstrations, home-made cakes and refreshments, whisky tasting from Claxton’s Whisky and music by the Loch Arthur Band; acknowledges that Dalswinton Mill, with Penny Burn adjacent, is set in an 18th century watermill on the Dalswinton estate; notes that both of this year’s nominated charities shared in the total record funds raised of £5,439, as part of Scotland’s Garden Scheme; understands that Loch Arthur Camphill Community is a working community near Dumfries supporting people with learning disabilities, and wishes everyone involved well for the future.

That the Parliament welcomes the news that NHS Grampian is trialling a process through the use of Annalise CXR software that could be embedded into lung cancer care across Scotland; notes that, following the success of NHS Grampian Innovation Hub’s GRACE project to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the detection of lung cancer, NHS Grampian, alongside the Accelerated National Innovation Adoption (ANIA) Pathway team, has seen diagnostic care for lung cancer improve across the Grampian area thanks to the use of innovative AI technology that scans x-ray images for more than 120 potential issues, with the team building on these results to help inform the roll-out of AI in other areas; understands that, while all chest x-ray images continue to be manually assessed by radiologists, the use of Annalise CXR software highlights images that may show signs of lung cancer so that they can be reviewed more urgently; notes that NHS Grampian analyses about 300 chest x-rays per day, with the number of referrals for urgent suspected cancer having increased by about 50% in the last five years in Grampian across all specialities; recognises that, if used in the right way, AI can help assist NHS boards while still maintaining a need for checks to be carried out; understands that the software was first introduced across 13 sites as part of NHS Grampian’s Innovation Hub’s GRACE project in 2022, to evaluate the use of AI in radiology departments, and that it was the first time that the Annalise CXR algorithm had been used by a UK health board, and that it continues to be a huge success; believes that, through the GRACE project, NHS Grampian is finding 12% more treatable cancers, meaning that they are being caught earlier, and that getting 95% of people through to treatment is taking 30 fewer days, and commends the work carried out by NHS Grampian in trialling what it sees as this transformative process, which can help to detect lung cancer that may have otherwise been unknown.
