In Memory of Emma Ritch

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 19 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00712

That the Parliament is deeply saddened by the passing of feminist campaigner and executive director of Engender, Emma Ritch; notes with admiration the way in which Emma dedicated her life and career to fighting for women’s equality and rights; understands that Emma was a hugely influential figure in the Scottish feminist movement and that the work that she did, in both professional roles and as a volunteer, has undoubtedly greatly improved the lives of women in Scotland; acknowledges that, as well as serving as executive director of Engender, Emma was also the chair of the board of trustees for Rape Crisis Scotland, another role in which she made a strong and lasting difference to the lives of vulnerable women in Scotland; agrees that the outpouring of messages of condolence from figures across Scottish politics and society is a reflection of the number of lives that Emma touched and how respected she was as an individual; passes sincere condolences to Emma’s husband, Kenny, her family, friends and the staff at Engender, and hopes that Emma’s constant commitment to fighting for women’s equality will inspire others to follow in her footsteps and continue the fight.
