Aid for Yemen

  • Submitted by: Jenny Marra, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 05 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24310

That the Parliament condemns the recent reduction in aid to Yemen by the UK Government; believes that the situation in Yemen counts among the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with 80% of the population, including 12.4 million children, in need of humanitarian assistance; understands that nearly 2.5 million of the children are malnourished, with hundreds of thousands described as "severely malnourished"; notes that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' belief that the risk of large scale famine in the country "has never been more acute"’; agrees with the UN Secretary General,  António Guterres, who described the reduction in aid as a "death sentence", and calls on the UK Government to meet its international responsibilities and to increase its planned aid to Yemen, at least to in line with previous years.
