  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 11 February 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24117

That the Parliament celebrates Commonwealth Day 2021 which has the theme of Delivering a Common Future and highlights how Commonwealth countries are "innovating, connecting and transforming to help achieve some of its biggest goals, like protecting natural resources and boosting trade"; recognises the work of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) over the last 12 months in quickly moving to virtual working, which has allowed MSPs to take part in a range of discussions, particularly in response to COVID-19; notes the involvement of MSPs in the work of the CPA across this current parliamentary session, including their discussions with the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians on ending violence against women and girls and with the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities on championing disability rights; notes the participation by MSPs in election-observing missions and post-election workshops for newly-elected parliamentarians in other legislatures, and in discussions with visiting parliamentarians on other key policy issues, such as tackling climate change and parliamentary accountability and scrutiny, and is confident that the Parliament, in its relations with Commonwealth legislatures across the next session, will continue to share ideas, thoughts, experiences and best practice on how to make parliaments work effectively in holding governments to account on behalf of the people that they serve.
