UK Government Trade Bill Amendment Rejected

  • Submitted by: Neil Findlay, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 21 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23923

That the Parliament condemns the UK Government in rejecting an amendment to the Trade Bill, which would have made ministers reconsider trade deals with countries that were found to be guilty of genocide; notes that the UK Government narrowly defeated the amendment by 319 to 308 votes; believes that every Conservative MP representing a Scottish constituency supported the government's position; understands that the proposals would enable UK courts to make a decision on whether a country was committing genocide and would have eliminated any post-Brexit trade talks with governments that were found to have approved mass killings; considers the rejection of this amendment a shameful indictment of the UK Government, and urges peers to reinsert the proposal when the bill is considered in the House of Lords.
