Westray Golf Club Has Longest Hole in the UK

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 29 September 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22859

That the Parliament congratulates Westray Golf Club on having the longest known hole in the UK; recognises that the third hole of the nine hole course is measured to be 738 yards, putting it ahead of the previous record of 725 yards held by West Midlands Golf Club; understands that the par six hole was created following a redesign of the course a few years ago, which saw two par four holes merged into one; further understands that Westray Golf Club is now encouraging everyone to take the world’s shortest flight from Papay Westray, which can be done in 47 seconds if the wind helps, to play the UK’s longest hole, which can take a significantly longer time if the wind is not helping; acknowledges that while the hole falls short of the world record 964-yard par seven hole at Satsuki Golf Club in Japan, the typically blustery conditions that players must negotiate when playing the Westray course makes this hole a considerable challenge for even the most experienced of golfers; notes that it is for this reason that a par, or even a bogey, is considered to be a good score; acknowledges, however, that a couple of club members can proudly claim to have achieved birdies on their scorecard and congratulates them on their impressive efforts, and wishes all those who decide to take on the challenge of the UK’s longest hole every success and enjoyment for their round.
