Shapinsay Albino Seal Accepted by its Community

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 24 September 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22832

That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Shapinsay seal colony, in Orkney, has welcomed an albino harbour seal into its family; welcomes reports that, despite its rare complexion, the pup has been accepted as just another seal by the colony and demonstrates a cheery disposition; understands that the lack of evident injuries verifies that it has been accepted by its mother and has integrated with the other seals; recognises that the strong sense of community spirit in Orkney is not limited to islanders; welcomes this news as evidence that 2020 can offer some success stories, and believes that there is comfort in sharing such heartening stories in what has otherwise been a difficult year.
