Reading Force Meets Huge Increase in Demand for Services

  • Submitted by: Gordon MacDonald, Edinburgh Pentlands, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 24 June 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22138

That the Parliament commends the role that Reading Force has played in keeping Armed Forces families in touch during the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that Reading Force is a charity that offers support to Ministry of Defence families in order that quality time is spent reading and telling stories to help bring families together; notes that the charity, founded in 2011 by Dr Alison Baverstock, provides free books, scrapbooks, competitions and certificates for children who have a parent in the Armed Forces; appreciates that Reading Force activities can be undertaken by personnel serving away from home over Skype or FaceTime to help maintain contact with their children; recognises that the pandemic has been a significant additional demand for Forces' families where COVID-19-related duties have been added to existing duties and many deployments have been extended, and commends Reading Force for meeting the 900% increase in demand for its services at the height of the pandemic.
