Free Sanitary Products in Orkney Schools

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 22 August 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-13601

That the Parliament welcomes the decision by Orkney Islands Council (OIC) to provide free sanitary products in schools from the first day of the 2018-19 school term; understands that evidence suggests that, across Scotland, more than a quarter of people in education have struggled at some point in the previous year to access sanitary products with some girls and young women having missed school because of this; acknowledges the hard work of the people who have campaigned on this issue over recent years; congratulates OIC on taking this decision, which, it believes, will ensure that girls and young women across the local authority area are able to access basic sanitary products whenever required; understands the difference that this will make to the lives of girls and young women in the islands, and wishes them all the best for the new academic year.
