The Proposed Privatisation of the MOD Guard Service

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 07 March 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-04473
  • Current status: Has not yet achieved cross-party support

That the Parliament expresses its concern about the proposal to privatise the MOD Guard Service, which is responsible for security at over 100 sites across the UK, including HMNB Clyde at Faslane and RNAD Coulport; understands that the service was established in 1992 in response to the loss of 11 lives in the 1989 terrorist attack on the Royal Marine Depot in Deal, which led to concerns regarding the site security that has been partly provided by private contractors; believes that the 2,000 civil servants working in the service across the UK are motivated and loyal employees who receive a much higher level of training than that offered by private security companies; welcomes Unite the Union’s campaign to oppose the privatisation, and notes the calls of the workers at Faslane and Coulport, as well as at the other nuclear and high-profile sites across the UK that contain military and civilian staff, for the Secretary of State for Defence to reject the proposal.
