MoD Secretly Lifts Ban on Nuclear Submarines in Scotland’s Lochs

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 08 January 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-12019

That the Parliament notes with concern reports that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has lifted a safety ban on both the nuclear-armed and powered submarines that use lochs in West Scotland; understands that the ban was imposed by the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator in May 2013 after safety exercises identified a number of flaws with the emergency plans that had been designed to protect the public in the event of accidents; condemns what it understands was the MoD's decision to lift the ban being made in secret without any evidence being provided to show that safety concerns have been resolved, and reaffirms the calls for the removal of all nuclear weapons from Scotland's waters and across the world.
