  • Motion reference: S6M-18454

That the Parliament marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day; recognises that 15 August 1945 was the day that Japan surrendered and brought an end to fighting in the Far East, and with it, the Second World War; remembers the sacrifices and the debt of gratitude owed to all those in the Armed Forces, including those from Shetland and the Northern Isles, and the suffering endured by thousands held as prisoners of war who fought for their country in difficult conditions; acknowledges the lifelong impact of their experiences on those who came home; highlights the service and work of the photographers and cameramen of the Army Film and Photographic Unit (No. 9), who received jungle warfare training before taking their cameras to and behind the frontline in the war in South East Asia, and the lasting legacy of their images of war; further highlights what it sees as the importance of accurate newsgathering from the frontline today by civilians, reporters, photographers and videographers in conflicts around the world, including Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, and commends their bravery; recognises what it considers to be the futility of war, and commends the Scottish Government and local communities for their action to ensure that anniversaries like VJ Day are commemorated and the horrors of war are not forgotten.
