Welcoming the Introduction of Marie Curie Services for Patients in Orkney

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 09 June 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17856

That the Parliament welcomes the news that a dedicated team of Marie Curie health assistants will be now based in Orkney to work alongside District Nursing Teams in providing palliative care support; understands that this development follows a successful trial of Marie Curie service provision in Orkney over the past year; considers that there is a clear benefit for terminally ill patients and their families to having additional specialist palliative care provision in Orkney, with teams working in patients homes and in local care homes to provide care delivery, emotional support and companionship; understands that the Marie Curie teams will enhance the accessibility and quality of palliative care services, which, it believes, are vital in ensuring that the needs of patients and families at the end of life are met with dignity, compassion and care; commends the work of the NHS Orkney and Marie Curie teams to secure the longer-term viability of these services, which it hopes will be embedded into local palliative care provision in Orkney for years to come, and thanks all those working tirelessly to ensure that terminally ill patients and their families receive the highest quality of care across Orkney.
