Screen Machine 25th Anniversary

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10410

That the Parliament celebrates the 25th anniversary of Screen Machine, Scotland’s mobile cinema; understands that Screen Machine brings new film releases to communities in the Highlands and Islands, including to many communities lacking access to a permanent cinema; appreciates what it sees as the importance of initiatives like these to rural and island communities, in supporting and enhancing their cultural life; commends all those involved in the service, which is run by Regional Screen Scotland; notes the campaign to secure new funding for Screen Machine, after the last permanent machine suffered a series of faults; understands that Regional Screen Scotland has requested funding from the Scottish Government to cover a deposit and begin building, without which it will have to wind down the service; believes that the loss of such a cultural asset would be significantly detrimental to communities across the Highlands and Islands, including Orkney, and calls on the Scottish Government to engage constructively with Regional Screen Scotland to agree a way forward that will safeguard this valuable service.
