  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-09384

That the Parliament congratulates Cookney Public Hall, near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire, which celebrated its centenary on 27 May 2023; understands that the land that Cookney Hall sits on was gifted by James Marshall Strachan, who grew up at Floors farm in the area and went on to work in Edinburgh and London in engineering, but always considered Cookney as his home; further understands that the majority of the £800 that it cost to build the hall was raised by the local community through a host of events such as whist nights, concerts, bazaars, dances and regular presentations from the Cookney Amateur Dramatic Society; commends the Friends of Cookney Hall for collecting photographs and articles about the hall, including features in the Mearns Leader dating back to 1923, to record its 100-year history for the community; recognises that the hall is now used for sports classes, local gatherings and music shows, and wishes the Friends of Cookney Hall and all users of the hall a happy next 100 years.
