Environmental Harm of Wet Wipes Containing Plastic

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 30 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09143

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the harm caused by wet wipes containing plastic and welcomes calls across the UK for a ban on such products; understands that a significant number of wet wipes contain plastic; acknowledges the consequences of the use of these wet wipes, which it understands causes 36,000 blockages each year in the sewer network, reportedly costing £7 million to clear, and notes the additional environmental damage reportedly caused by these wipes, including the pollution of beaches and the killing of wildlife.
