  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 18 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08980

That the Parliament congratulates Shetland’s inshore fishing sector on two wins at the 2023 Fishing News Awards, which was held in Aberdeen on 11 May 2023; understands that the annual awards event is dedicated to recognising achievement, innovation and success in the UK and Irish commercial fishing industry; congratulates Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO) on winning the Sustainability Award and Shetland skipper, Richard Grains, on being awarded Under 10m Fisherman of the Year; understands that Mr Grains operates in waters regulated by the SSMO and has been working creels since he entered the industry more than 15 years ago; commends the hard work by Mr Grains, who, it understands, fishes in exposed waters to the northwest of Shetland, and by all at SSMO, to support sustainable fishing; believes that by recognising SSMO and Mr Grains, the awards acknowledge the importance of local decision-making and community within the fishing industry, and wishes Mr Grains and all at SSMO well.
