Celebrating the European Marine Energy Centre

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 18 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08931

That the Parliament welcomes the findings of a report by BiGGAR Economics, which confirms the significant economic and scientific value of the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), which is based in Orkney; notes that the impact assessment estimated that EMEC has added some £370 million to the UK economy since its establishment 20 years ago; further notes that the report estimates that EMEC has created £8 of economic value for every £1 of public funds spent; understands that EMEC was the world’s first test centre for marine energy and is a leading site for research into the potential of wave and tidal power; applauds EMEC for having been economically self-sustaining since 2011, while creating, it understands, hundreds of high skilled, high value jobs in Orkney and the rest of Scotland and the UK; acknowledges what it sees as the collaborative approach EMEC has taken locally, nationally and internationally; commends all those at EMEC for the important role they have played in the development of sustainable and renewable energy, which, it believes, is crucial in the fight to combat climate change and the transition to Net Zero, and looks forward to EMEC continuing to be at the forefront of efforts to deliver a future powered by clean, green energy.
