International Nurses Day 2023

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 16 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08924

That the Parliament recognises that 12 May 2023 is International Nurses Day; understands that International Nurses Day is celebrated across the world every year on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth; believes that this day is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that nursing staff make to people’s lives, and to thank those working in health and social care across Scotland for all that they do; understands that the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is marking the day by asking members, patients, the public and politicians to share stories about a time that a nurse, nursing support worker or student nurse made a difference to them and, in Scotland, will announce the finalists of the inaugural RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards; acknowledges what it sees as the challenges and pressures that nursing staff are under in health and care services across the country, and notes the recommendations set out in the RCN’s report, The Nursing Workforce in Scotland, which details the actions that RCN Scotland believes are required to expand Scotland's highly skilled and dedicated nursing workforce and achieve a sustainable workforce that meets Scotland’s needs.
