Castle Gardens Care Home Invergordon

  • Submitted by: Ariane Burgess, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 02 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08740

That the Parliament condemns the decision of private social care provider, HC-One, to sell Castle Gardens Care Home, in Invergordon, without any legacy or succession planning, making 48 workers redundant in the midst of the cost of living crisis and forcing residents to move home; supports GMB Scotland’s members and their campaign to save Castle Gardens from closure, and to protect jobs and services; recognises what it sees as the dedication and value of social care workers and the services that they provide to the most vulnerable people; considers that the closure will be disruptive to the care of residents, especially to those with dementia, who are dependent on existing relationships and environments, and will require family members to travel further to visit their loved ones; opposes the decision made by HC-One in 2021 to sell 52 care homes across the UK, five of which will be in the Highlands and Islands region, which is indicative of a concerning trend among private care providers who, it believes, are leaving workers without jobs, residents without homes, and communities without vital local services; considers that a precedent has been set by NHS Highland, following the purchase of Kintyre Care Home in Campbeltown from HC-One, and therefore calls on NHS Highland to acquire Castle Gardens Care Home so that staff may continue in their roles and residents in their homes.
