Shetlander Julie-Ann Murray Celebrated as Scottish Apprentice of the Year

  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 13 March 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08192

That the Parliament congratulates Julie-Ann Murray from Shetland on being named Scottish Apprentice of the Year; understands that the 21-year-old, who has been completing her modern apprenticeship in agriculture, was determined to gain qualifications while staying settled on the isles and without leaving for the Scottish mainland; understands that she took it upon herself to convince a local sheep farmer to take her on as an apprentice, while studying at the University of the Highlands and Islands’ Shetland campus; believes that this shows Julie-Ann to be a hardworking and dedicated individual; acknowledges that she has thrived in this role and is now trusted to watch over and manage 1,000 sheep; understands that, because of the skill and responsibility levels that she has attained, her employer managed to have her first holiday in five years; further understands that Julie-Ann, who is from North Roe, has stated that doing a modern apprenticeship in agriculture means that she does what she loves every day and gains a qualification while receiving a salary; believes that modern apprenticeships that blend classroom learning and hands-on working enable apprentices such as Julie-Ann to flourish in their chosen area, and wishes her success in her career.
