Celebrating 40 Years of Shetland Women's Aid

That the Parliament celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Shetland Women’s Aid; understands that Shetland Women’s Aid will celebrate its 40th anniversary on 8 March 2023, International Women’s Day; further understands that, since its establishment in 1983, Shetland Women’s Aid has worked towards a vision of society where women are free to be who they want and do what they want, free from control and abuse; recognises that Shetland Women’s Aid provides confidential support services for both adults and children and young people affected by domestic abuse in Shetland, including one-to-one practical and emotional support, trauma recovery, counselling, legal guidance and provision of emergency refuge housing; acknowledges that, alongside direct support, Shetland Women’s Aid carries out information outreach and advocacy work, including in schools and through the arts, including working with other local organisations to produce theatrical works highlighting the experiences of those impacted by domestic abuse; condemns all forms of domestic abuse as gender-based violence that violates human rights; expresses its full support for the work of Shetland Women’s Aid to support and advocate for victims and survivors of domestic abuse and to prevent domestic abuse occurring in Shetland; congratulates Shetland Women’s Aid for four decades of carrying out this important work, and wishes all at Shetland Women’s Aid well as they mark their 40th anniversary.
