Chest Heart and Stroke’s Health Defence Programme, and Tackling Health Inequalities Through Walking Football

  • Submitted by: Bob Doris, Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 12 December 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07197

That the Parliament commends Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland on its Health Defence programme in Glasgow, delivered in conjunction with Glasgow Life, which, it understands, supports people in Maryhill and Drumchapel to make positive changes to support their health and wellbeing, and that it has provided over a hundred health checks to the community over its first six months; notes that 3,500 people across Scotland regularly participate in walking football, with sessions available across Scotland from Shetland to Gretna and from Campbeltown across to Dunbar; recognises the opportunities that it believes walking football presents in helping to maintain an active lifestyle and staying physically healthy, in returning to football after health events, injury or age, and in providing important social opportunities; considers that heart attack and stroke are still more common in low Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) communities than in more affluent ones, and that mortality is higher for these conditions in low SIMD communities; recognises the potential for both walking football and Health Defence Scotland to benefit even more communities across Scotland, and looks forward to it growing further in the months and years to come.
