Sail Training Shetland Demonstrates Benefits of Outdoor Education

  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 23 August 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05686

That the Parliament recognises that outdoor education experiences for children and young people have benefits including improved self-esteem, valuable experiences of teamwork and leadership, and stronger connections to the natural environment; believes that these benefits are demonstrated by Sail Training Shetland, a charity which provides annual sail training opportunities to young people aged between 15 and 25 years from Shetland, using partnerships with tall ship operators to provide sail training on a variety of different ships; understands that this experience is challenging and requires participants to take on personal responsibility, develop understanding of risk and work together in teams; further understands that the activity is open to all regardless of physical ability or fitness and that there are a number of sponsored placements available each year to enable more young people to take part; notes that Liz Smith MSP has proposed a Schools Residential Outdoor Education Scotland Bill that would ensure young people have the opportunity to experience residential outdoor education; believes that outdoor education should be available to all children and young people, and commends Sail Training Shetland for its work.
