The Shetland Times Newspaper 150th Anniversary

  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05034

That the Parliament congratulates the directors and staff of The Shetland Times newspaper on its 150th anniversary; understands that, since 1872, it has upheld the traditions of a free and fair local press in its weekly printed editions; notes its long commitment to providing readers with a wealth of news and local sports reporting along with coverage of local and national elections, ensuring that readers know what is going on in Shetland; recalls reports of local and national importance such as the grounding of the Braer, the Tall Ships Races, and the NatWest Island Games; commends what it sees as the commitment to provide factual accounts of events, countering "fake news" and competing with social media; further recalls that The Shetland Times was the first weekly newspaper in Scotland to go online in March 1996, alongside its physical presence; wishes The Shetland Times well, and hopes it will continue to provide global readers with the local news from Shetland.
