RNLI Longhope Coxswain Retirement

That the Parliament congratulates Kevin Kirkpatrick on his retirement as Coxswain of RNLI Longhope after 20 years of service; notes that Kevin became Coxswain in 2002, which it understands fulfilled a long-held ambition and followed a firm lifeboat tradition on both sides of the family stretching back to Kevin's great grandfather, Thomas Gunn, who was the Bowman on the first Longhope Lifeboat; notes that Kevin tragically lost his father, grandfather and uncle on 17 March 1969 when eight men perished after the Longhope lifeboat, TBG, capsized during a heroic rescue attempt in treacherous weather; commends Kevin for following in their footsteps and on his enduring commitment to RNLI Longhope, which has ensured that their legacy has been maintained through generations of new volunteer crew, including Kevin's children, Stella and Jack; understands that Kevin was accorded a vellum for his leadership and seamanship in 2004 when the lifeboat saved three people and the yacht, Dasher, in wind speeds of up to 85 knots; further understands that Kevin, and the Longhope volunteer crew, were presented with a framed letter of thanks from the then RNLI Chairman, Admiral Sir Jock Sclater, for the first major service in the new Tamar Class lifeboat, Helen Comrie, when they saved an injured man from tanker, FR8 Venture, in force 12 north westerly winds and a 15 metre swell; believes that Kevin has been a highly respected Coxswain, whose seafaring expertise has benefited his crew and tireless support of the station has benefited the wider community; understands that Kevin will continue to play a role at RNLI Longhope as part of the life-saving crew; thanks Kevin for his service, and wishes him and the Kirkpatrick family all the very best for the future.
