To ask the Scottish Government how it proposes to reduce the number of people who develop heart disease.
Answer
We know that a significant proportion of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is preventable and influenced by modifiable health behaviours. The Scottish Government is taking decisive action to address alcohol consumption, reduce smoking rates, encourage active living and healthy eating.
The prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the six priorities identified in the Scottish Government’s Heart Disease Improvement Plan (2014), through which we are aiming to provide care which is responsive to the needs of the people of Scotland.

To ask the Scottish Government how it will encourage more people to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Answer
We are committed to improving survival rates from Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) and are working in partnership with a range of public and voluntary organisations to deliver the aims in Scotland's strategy for OHCA published in March 2015.
The Strategy aims is to have 500,000 people in Scotland trained in the use of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and increase survival rates by 10% across the country by 2020. Learning cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is important in increasing bystander CPR, which in turn is essential to improving survival rates.
The public-facing campaign to increase CPR ‘Save a Life for Scotland’ was launched on 16 October 2015. Save a Life for Scotland (SALFS) is the partnership of public and voluntary organisations leading on the delivery of the OHCA Strategy aim to increase the number of people who are CPR trained.
Work is now underway to plan and deliver CPR training to the Scottish public over the duration of the next five years.
