Questions and answers

Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

Written questions must be answered within 10 working days (20 working days during recess)

To ask the Scottish Government what its position is on establishing a national park in the Western Isles.

There are no current plans to designate new national parks in Scotland. The creation of new national parks requires considerable planning and carries cost implications which must be considered against the backdrop of the current financial climate and competing priorities.

The Scottish Government will continue to work across the country to protect the environment and promote Scotland as a world class visitor destination, whilst building a sustainable economic future for the people of Scotland.

To ask the Scottish Government whether there is a managed clinical network for Parkinson's disease.

National Managed Clinical Networks (MCNs) are the responsibility of NHS National Services Scotland’s National Services Division. A list of MCNs, including the commissioning process and establishment criteria, can be found on their dedicated website at: http://www.mcns.scot.nhs.uk/.

Our National Advisory Committee for Neurological Conditions has recently convened a subgroup dedicated to Parkinson’s disease. This subgroup will look at driving regional and national improvement in services and outcomes for people who live with the condition.

To ask the Scottish Government what research it is funding into Parkinson's disease.

The Scottish Government provides annual funding of over £490,000 for the Scottish Dementia and Neuroprogressive Disease Research Network. The network supports a wide range of research studies in Neuroprogressive disease, including Parkinson’s. The network is currently supporting 5 Parkinson’s studies, which in total have recruited over 500 patients.

The Chief Scientist Office funds research through its competitive response mode funding committees. Research proposals in Parkinson’s Disease (including research into the underlying mechanisms and causes, diagnosis, prevention, disease-modifying treatments, care pathways etc.) would be welcomed. In common with all other applications, any such proposals would be subject to the Chief Scientist Office’s standard independent expert review process.

To ask the Scottish Government what its response is to the College of Occupational Therapists' report, Reducing the pressure on hospitals: A report on the value of occupational therapy in Scotland.

The Scottish Government recognises the valuable contribution that occupational therapists make to reducing admissions to hospital and to discharge planning and we welcome this report.

Our Active and Independent Living Improvement Programme, currently in development, will help maximise the contribution occupational therapists, and other Allied Health Professionals, make to Scotland's health and social care services. The programme will be wide ranging, delivering interventions that emphasise early intervention and enablement within the home or community setting. A key aim of the programme will be to reduce demand and impact on acute services.
