To ask the Scottish Executive whether it will guarantee that Modernising Medical Careers will not lead to centralisation and closure of hospitals or departments in the NHS.
Answer
The key principle ofModernising Medical Careers (MMC) is to ensure that service delivery ismaintained. In accordance with Delivering for Health, MMC will provide suitablyskilled doctors for the services that the NHS Scotland needs. It is a UK-widelong-term programme, aimed at improving the training of doctors, to improvepatient care and better meet service needs in the future. It does this byintroducing a more focussed, competence based training, which is not timebased.
