To ask the Scottish Executive how many VAT registered businesses there were in Stirling in each of the last three years for which figures are available, broken down by sector.
Answer
Data on the stock of VAT registeredenterprises is released annually by the Small Business Service, an agency of theDepartment for Trade and Industry.
These figures do not accountfor all business activity as only companies with a turnover above the VAT thresholdare required to register.
The following table shows thenumber of VAT registered enterprises in the Stirling local authority area ineach of the last three years for which figures are available, broken down by broadindustry sector.

To ask the Scottish Executive how many awards of Education Maintenance Allowance were made in Stirling in 2005-06, also showing the total amount paid.
Answer
In academic year 2005-06, a totalof 440 school and college students in Stirling received an EMA payment (370 school students and 70 collegestudents). The total amount paid to school students within Stirling was £324,250.This relates to all weekly and bonus EMA payments made to these students. Informationon the amounts paid to college students from Stirling is not currently available.
