To ask the Scottish Executive how many people were admitted to hospital as a result adverse drug reactions in each of the last 10 years, broken down by NHS board.
The Information requested isshown in the following table. The increase in the numbers of patients, over theperiod, with a diagnosis of adverse drug reactions may, in part, be explained byimprovements in the recording of secondary diagnoses in recent years. Data priorto 1997 has not been included in the table because the different coding structureused to collect it does not allow for a direct comparison.

2. Up to six diagnoses (oneprincipal, five secondary) are recorded on SMR01 returns. All six diagnoseshave been used to select adverse drug reactions. All codes were selected fromthe International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Other HealthRelated Problems, tenth revision (ICD10):
3. Adverse drug reactionscan be the reason for admission to a hospital or can have occurred whilst inhospital as a result of medication.
4. Please note it is notpossible to distinguish between prescribed and non-prescribed drugs.
5. A patient will be countedonce in each year. Patients may be counted more than once across years.
