The University of Sheffield modelling estimates that a 50p minimum unit price will result in a reduction of direct crime costs of £2.9 million in year one and a reduction of £24 million in the cumulative discounted value over ten years. This is allocated differentially over drinker type with a reduction in direct crime costs for moderate drinkers of £0.7 million in year one and a reduction of £6 million in the cumulative discounted value over ten years; a reduction of £0.8 million for hazardous drinkers in year one and a reduction of £6 million in the cumulative discounted value over ten years; a reduction of £1.3 million for harmful drinkers in year one and a reduction of £11 million in the cumulative discounted value over ten years.

The University of Sheffield modelling estimates that a 50 pence minimum unit price will result in 1,300 fewer unemployed per annum, and this comes solely from the harmful drinker type category.

It is not possible to estimate any reduction in deaths due to the reported reduction in consumption in the Monitoring and Evaluating Scotland’s Alcohol Strategy: second Annual Report as the impact on the number of deaths may take a number of years to become apparent.

The University of Sheffield modelling estimates that a 50 pence minimum unit price will result in a reduction in the value of harm of £64 million in year one with a reduction in the cumulative discounted value of harm of £942 million over ten years. his is allocated differentially over drinker type with a reduction in the value of harm for moderate drinkers of £9.3 million in year one and a cumulative discounted value of harm reduction over ten years of £147 million; for hazardous drinkers, a reduction of £10.1 million in year one and a cumulative discounted value of harm reduction over ten years of £235 million; for harmful drinkers, a reduction of £44.5 million in year one and a cumulative discounted value of harm reduction over ten years of £558 million.

In terms of recruitment into foundation and front line specialty training programme posts for 2013, we have maintained intake numbers at 2012 levels. While data for recruitment into foundation posts for 2013 will not be available for some time, recruitment into specialty training within the West Deanery, which encompasses NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, shows an overall fill rate of 84%. As normal, unfilled vacancies will be passed back to individual boards to recruit locally.

 It is important to emphasise that in planning their rotas individual boards should take proper account of the need to balance these with a mix of training and service posts to ensure safe and effective care is provided at all times. We have been assured by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde that it is pursuing a range of options to avoid repetition of their 2012 difficulties, and I have requested that my officials stay in regular contact with the board as we move towards the August 2013 changeover period.

The Scottish Government established a paediatric cancer Managed Service Network in 2011 with funding from the National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People’s Specialist Services (NDP) to ensure that children and young people with a diagnosis of cancer attain the best possible outcomes, have access to appropriate specialist services, as locally as possible that are both safe and sustainable and that the pathway of care is as equitable as possible.

Children’s cancer services were identified as a priority for investment during the development of the NDP. The NDP was published in January 2009 and £32 million was allocated to improve a number of specialist services. Over the three years of the NDP £5.4 million was allocated to paediatric cancer with £3.2 million recurring year on year from 2011.

The managed service network for children and young people with cancer provides a range of information and resources to GPs and health professionals and information for parents and families. In addition, we are working with the Teenage Cancer Trust on their schools education programme to raise awareness of cancer among children and young people. The guidance on children unable to attend school due to ill-health which contains advice on the duty to provide education to children, wherever they are, if they are unable to attend school due to ill-health is currently being reviewed with a view to new guidance being published later this year.

Proton beam therapy is currently provided by only a small number of treatment centres in the world. Access to high energy proton beam therapy for all appropriate patients in Scotland is managed through an agreed and confirmed referral pathway, through the UK panel on proton beam therapy. 15 patients from across Scotland were referred for proton beam therapy between 2008 and 2012. Due to the small number, data cannot be provided on a board-by-board basis due to patient confidentiality.
