Petty assault does not existas a classification within the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service’soperational database. All cases reported by the police which involve an assaultinclude a detailed description of the circumstances and nature of the assault.

The following table providesa breakdown of the charges of assault and breach of the peace that included aracial aggravation.

Note : The information inthe table relates to the number of charges and not to the number of accusedpersons. The 476 charges involving racial offences involved a total of 399accused. The 186 charges involving a racial aggravation involved a total of 84accused.

 

The Scottish Executive doesnot hold information on the number of MAs broken down by sector andgeographical area centrally. This detail is an operational matter for ScottishEnterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

While a breakdown byindustrial sector is not held centrally by the Executive we do hold totalnumbers of modern apprenticeships (MAs) for Scotland for each year since1999. The figures relate to the first quarter in each year and are given in thetable below.

Table E13 shows the average whole timeequivalent (WTE) and actual hours worked for agency nursing staff, broken downby NHS board area, by financial year from 2000-2001 to 2004-2005. WTE adjustsheadcount staff figures to take account of part-time staff.

At March 2005, the total number of nurses and midwives employed by NHS Borders was at a record level of1,446 headcount.

The broad information requested is available since 1998-9, but only since 2002 by the management categories specified. Prior to 1998 many pre-school education providers were excluded from the school census and therefore data from those years are not comparable to the data presented here.

In January 2005 the ratio ofnursery teachers to children in local authority pre-school education centreswas 1:37. In private pre-school education centres the ratio was 1:69.

These figures are taken fromthe Pre-school and Childcare Census 2005. The definition of nursery teachers usedis “staff delivering pre-school education who are registered with The GeneralTeaching Council for Scotland”.

The ratio represents theratio of teachers to children registered at the centre – it does not representnumbers of teachers working with children at any one time.

Scottish Development International does not keep records of how many jobs are created by individual inward investors in a given year. The published figures reflect the number of jobs which a company plans to create or safeguard at the time its decision to invest in Scotland was made. The published figures refer only to projects in which Scottish Development International and its partners can claim to have had a significant involvement in ensuring that the project takes place in Scotland. The following figures relate to projects where a company has made a decision to invest or expand and where the main activity of the project is manufacturing. Not all jobs created by a manufacturing project are necessarily manufacturing jobs.
