International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-10092

That the Parliament recognises the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August 2023, as designated by UN General Assembly resolution 49/214 to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population; understands that this day also recognises the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to global issues of importance, such as environmental protection; believes that violations of the rights of the world's indigenous peoples have become a persistent problem, and that this is often because of colonialism and increasing pressure for resources to fuel unrestrained economic growth; considers that the future of indigenous peoples depends on the decisions that are made today, through institutions of power, and processes that involve their representation and participation in global efforts towards climate change mitigation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development, and further considers that indigenous peoples have the right to make their own decisions and carry them out meaningfully and in a manner that is culturally appropriate to them.
