Kelpies Shine Green to Raise Awareness of Rare Genetic Disorder Phelan-McDermid Syndrome

  • Submitted by: Stephen Kerr, Central Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 October 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06466

That the Parliament recognises that the Kelpies shone brightly green on 22 October 2022 to raise awareness of the rare genetic condition, Phelan-McDermid Syndrome; acknowledges that families of children with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome gathered at the Kelpies to bring attention to the wider Falkirk and Scottish community; understands that there are only 3,000 people worldwide who are known to be affected by the syndrome, which is caused by a deletion or variation in chromosome 22, and further understands that children with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome are rarely able to live independently in adulthood, but can live fulfilling lives when they receive appropriate medical and educational support.
