Jim Owens MBE

  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 23 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03708

That the Parliament notes with great sadness the passing of 74-year-old Jim Owens MBE from Greenock, who was a firefighter, charity champion and accomplished artist; understands that Jim took up art at a young age and was inspired by the Clyde, but at 23 decided to join the fire service, serving at Port Glasgow Station; notes that Jim threw himself into charity work during his time as a firefighter, receiving an MBE in 2000 in recognition of voluntary work with the Light Trust of Port Glasgow, which saw Jim visit Kosovo and Bulgaria to build and refurbish orphanages, and supply aid and support to the communities there; recognises that Jim continued to paint throughout his life and, with his wife, Grace, who also had a passion for art, exhibited work often with Greenock Art Club and in other galleries throughout the west of Scotland; further recognises that Jim regularly donated his artworks for the benefit of local charities; believes that Jim was well loved in the community, and sends its condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.
