University of the West of Scotland Develops Rapid COVID-19-detecting Technology

  • Submitted by: Dr Pam Gosal MBE, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 21 January 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-02871

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Naeem Ramzan, Director of the Centre for Affective and Human Computing for SMART Environments at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), who, it understands, led a three-person team to develop technology that is capable of accurately diagnosing COVID-19 in just a few minutes; notes that Gabriel Okolo and Dr Stamos Katsigiannis were also part of the team; understands that they pioneered a ground-breaking Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme, which is able to detect the virus far faster than a PCR test, which typically takes around two hours, and believes that Scottish universities are at the forefront of new technologies and should be adequately funded to retain this lead.
