WHALE Arts Shortlisted for Charity of the Year

That the Parliament congratulates WHALE Arts in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh, on being shortlisted in the charity of the year category in the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) 2021 Scottish Charity Awards; notes that SCVO, the national membership organisation for the voluntary sector, aims to support, promote and develop a confident, sustainable voluntary sector in Scotland; recognises that WHALE Arts is a building-based and place-based, community-led charity and social enterprise with the objective to act as a conduit between the community and creative and cultural projects that happen in the area; understands that WHALE Arts was shortlisted due to its response during COVID-19 with the citation for its award noting it “responded swiftly to Covid-19 and immediately adapted the way it worked to support the people of Wester Hailes”; further understands that the WHALE Arts team was cited for being “concerned that people’s mental health and family relationships were put under increased pressure as a result of lockdown restrictions so they collaborated to mitigate against feelings of loneliness, isolation and disconnection from the community through friendship calls, food, art-packs, wellbeing packs, digital devices and support, and just general kindness and compassion”; believes that the cited contributions to the community have been significant and invaluable to Wester Hailes during the pandemic, and congratulates the team at WHALE Arts on their achievement in being nominated.
