Rejection of 10% Cuts to Rail Services

  • Submitted by: Neil Bibby, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 20 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00918

That the Parliament notes the recent report prepared for the ScotRail operators, Abellio, by Professor Iain Docherty; understands that the report considers a 10% cut to rail services on pre-pandemic levels and questions the future of ticket offices; notes the joint statement issued by the trade unions, ASLEF, RMT, TSSA and Unite, calling on the Scottish Government to reject the report, which they reportedly believe “seeks to exploit the Covid pandemic and its fallout to attack the jobs of railway workers and cut the services they provide to the public”; recognises what it sees as the economic and social value of public transport and importance of the rail network to Scotland’s net zero ambitions, and considers, therefore, as Scotland prepares to host the COP26 summit, that the Scottish Government should reject the report and develop an alternative vision for a sustainable, publicly-owned ScotRail.
