Job Losses in the Oil and Gas Sector

  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 17 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00869

That the Parliament notes with concern the publication of Oil & Gas UK’s 2021 Workforce and Employment Insight report; understands that 34,700 direct and indirect jobs, supported by the oil and gas sector, have been lost in 2020 and that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the sector, with commodity prices falling considerably over the course of 2020; highlights, in particular, data from the Department for Work and Pensions, which, it believes, shows that the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire more than doubled between February 2020 and February 2021; underscores the comments by Oil & Gas UK’s Market Intelligence Manager that “Aberdeen has been at the centre of this and we can all feel that living here”; considers that urgent action must be taken to tackle climate change, especially in light of the sobering findings of the latest report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published in July 2021; believes, however, that the technical expertise of the oil and gas sector will be pivotal to the energy transition and reaching Scotland’s 2045 net zero target, and calls for continued support of the sector as it seeks to recover from the economic downturn, and shifts to cleaner forms of energy.
