Opposing the Incinerator at Ochiltree

  • Submitted by: Carol Mochan, South Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 22 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00715

That the Parliament recognises what it considers the democratic and passionate local campaign of residents in and around the village of Ochiltree, East Ayrshire, against a proposed waste incinerator by Barr Environmental at the Killoch site; commends in particular the efforts of campaigners to gather what it understands to be hundreds of written objections from local people to the plan; congratulates the organisers on holding safe, outdoor, roadside demonstrations that have brought communities together in difficult circumstances; understands that energy-from-waste incinerators can have a damaging impact on local communities and the wider environment as a result of the incineration process and increased traffic, and calls on the government to progress the review of the role of incineration in Scotland's waste hierarchy, as committed to by the Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport, in order to prevent this development and others, so that Scotland can meet its commitments to net-zero emissions before further damage is done.
