Repression of the People’s Democratic Party of Turkey

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 24 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24467

That the Parliament condemns what it considers to be the ongoing targeted repression of MPs, staff and members of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) of Turkey, noting reports that more than 16,000 members of the pro-Kurdish democratic opposition party have been arrested or detained by the Turkish regime of Recip Erdogan; further condemns the reported recent strip-search and physical assault of Ms Dilek Hatipoglu, the former co-mayor of Hakkari, the dismissal from parliament, removal of parliamentary immunity and prosecution of Ömer Faruk Gergerlioglu and the sentencing of the already imprisoned former HDP co-leader, Selahattin Demirtas, to a further three-and-a-half year sentence for the so-called crime of offending the President of Turkey; further notes that Mr Demirtas’ imprisonment has been ruled unlawful by the European Court of Human Rights and understands that, in the court’s view, it amounts to an attempt to limit political debate and curb pluralism; calls on the Scottish and UK governments to make direct and urgent representation to their Turkish counterparts on behalf of the imprisoned and persecuted members of Turkey’s democratic opposition, and stands in solidarity with the Kurdish and LGBT people, the women’s movement, human rights defenders, journalists and all others who defy what it considers to be the authoritarian AKP regime.
