  • Motion reference: S5M-24368

That the Parliament recognises the importance of female safety; understands that, according to a survey by UN Women UK, 97% of young women in the UK have said that they have been sexually harassed and that over 70% of women of all ages reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment in public spaces; praises the work of Borders Women’s Aid in providing refuge and support for women, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic; notes the findings of the social attitudes survey 2019, which acknowledges that gaps remain between views on the level of wrongness and harm caused by coercive control, verbal abuse and sexual violence; recognises that more must be done to improve women’s safety to influence a shift in attitudes towards sexual harassment and violence against women; calls for a national campaign to challenge and change attitudes that permit sexual violence, and believes that educating and empowering young people with the knowledge that they need to navigate consent and healthy relationships is key to changing attitudes and is a vital step towards ensuring a more equal world especially during Women’s History Month.
