80th Anniversary of 470 (Falkirk) Squadron Air Training Corps

  • Submitted by: Angus MacDonald, Falkirk East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 18 February 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24176

That the Parliament celebrates the 80th anniversary of the 470 (Falkirk) Squadron of the Air Training Corps (ATC), the cadet force of the RAF; understands that the squadron was formed on 18 February 1941, moving to its first dedicated headquarters in Falkirk’s Melville Street, then moving to Elgin Place in the town in the mid-1950s before settling in its current home in 1970 at the former Civil Defence Site in Bellsmeadow; notes that the ATC is a UK-wide cadet force with over 40,000 members aged between 12 and 20, with many thousands of adult instructors and volunteers, which aims to promote and encourage a practical interest in aviation and the RAF among young people, provide training which will be useful in the armed services as well as in civilian life, encourage the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship; considers the value of youth organisations as important in providing spaces for young people to grow and learn with their peers in many different environments, with opportunities to experience new and interesting activities; acknowledges that the motto of the RAF, the Latin phrase "Per Ardua ad Astra", meaning "Through Adversity to the Stars", is something we can all take inspiration from in times of significant challenge; congratulates the 470 (Falkirk) Squadron on its milestone of providing opportunity, experience and enjoyment to young people in the Falkirk area for 80 years, and wishes it continued success both locally as part of the newly formed Falkirk Sector, along with Grangemouth and Denny Squadrons, and nationally, in the South East Scotland wing of the ATC.
