Concern for the Kestrel Population

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 22 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23934

That the Parliament notes with concern what it sees as the drastic fall in kestrel numbers across Scotland, with the current population estimated to be 7,765 pairs; understands that a recent NatureScot report suggests that there has been a fall of over 80% in the last 25 years, with a year-on-year decline of 59% between 2018 and 2019; believes that the reasons for the decline are not well understood but that contributing factors are likely to be the collapsing vole population, which kestrels prey on, and a loss of habitat, and supports further studies followed by any necessary action required to secure a healthy future for one of Scotland’s most recognisable birds.
