10th Anniversary of Linda Norgrove's Death

That the Parliament commemorates the 10th anniversary of the death of Linda Norgrove, an aid worker from the Isle of Lewis who tragically died in Afghanistan on 8 October 2010; recognises that Linda was a highly qualified and dedicated environmental expert who spent her life helping to improve the lives of others, most notably in Afghanistan; acknowledges her affinity and connection with the people of Afghanistan, and her devotion to ensuring that they would achieve prosperity and stability as their country was rebuilt; notes that she is remembered as an inspiration by colleagues and by the Afghans she worked with; commends Linda’s parents, John and Lorna Norgrove, for establishing the Linda Norgrove Foundation in her memory and to continue her work; understands that the Foundation’s primary goal is to help women and children in Afghanistan, and that it develops and supports programmes with a special emphasis on education and incomes for women; welcomes that, over the last 10 years, over £1.6 million has been sent to help women and children in Afghanistan; notes that the Foundation currently gives scholarships allowing 156 young women attending college or university, including 68 women studying to become doctors, and wishes Linda’s parents and the Foundation continued success with their work in Afghanistan.
