80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

  • Submitted by: Maurice Corry, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 16 September 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22732

That the Parliament remembers that 15 September 2020 marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain; understands that this airborne battle between the RAF and the Luftwaffe involved a huge contribution from not only "The Few" fighter pilots, but also vital support on the ground, such as the members of the Royal Observer Corps and the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force; recognises that, although the Battle of Britain took place from 10 July until 31 October 1940, it was the 15 September that proved to be the RAF’s decisive victory from the Luftwaffe’s most concerted attack against London; welcomes the national tribute made by the RAF Benevolent Fund in the form of a light show held at a historic Battle of Britain radar site to honour those who played a critical role in the battle, and profoundly appreciates the work of the RAF Benevolent Fund and the many other Armed Forces organisations that continue to shine a light on what it sees as the importance of veterans and the value of nationwide remembrance.
