Stonehaven Rail Accident First Responders

  • Submitted by: Liam Kerr, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 24 August 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22496

That the Parliament commends the bravery and commitment of all emergency services and first responders that attended the scene of the recent train derailment at Carmont, near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire; understands that this was a multi-agency effort that included the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland and the British Transport Police, as well as railway maintenance staff, who were among the first on the scene to help passengers in danger; notes that the geographical circumstances made it incredibly challenging and hazardous for the emergency services to reach the overturned and derailed carriages; acknowledges the impact and trauma that such tragedies can have on the mental health of these first responders; recognises that events like this accident are mercifully rare, but that this will be little consolation to the three families who lost loved ones, and sends them its sincere condolences at this painful time.
