Increasing Concentration of Wealth

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 07 August 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-18456

That the Parliament notes the report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which highlights an increasing concentration of wealth in London and the south east of England, where it states the percentage of the top 1% of UK earners has increased from 29% to 35% between 2000-01 and 2014-15; considers that inequality has increased as a result of austerity, stagnant wage growth for the average worker and the UK Conservative administration's policies; believes that it is clear that austerity has served only to entrench inequality and has not worked for Scotland, and urges all parties in the Scottish Parliament to demand greater tax raising and social welfare provision powers to reduce the impact of austerity on growing inequality.
